Hinterkaifeck murders: footprints led in but never led out
Six people were killed at a Bavarian farm in 1922, but someone stayed behind to feed the animals and handle food before vanishing without a trace.
A line of footprints led from the forest to Hinterkaifeck and stopped at the house. On March 31, 1922, the isolated Bavarian farmstead held six people, including Andreas Gruber and his wife, Katsilia. The family had already noticed strange signs around the property, including movement in the attic.
That evening, all six were killed with a mattock. For days, nobody came to check. Yet the empty farm continued to function.
Someone stayed behind
Food had been handled, and the animals had been fed. When the bodies were finally found, the killer had vanished. The footprints ended at the house, with no matching trail back into the snow.
The mystery remains
Nobody has ever explained who stayed afterward, or why.
