Ferry worker confesses to lighthouse murders as water rises around him
Trapped on a sinking ferry, Terrence sees reflections of ships he deliberately wrecked and discovers photographs proving an impossible bargain with a lighthouse.
Terrence wrote four words in the ferry log while seawater climbed over the tires. The car ferry had vanished in a storm, but the ferry was still sinking. Terrence was trapped on the lowest deck, with red emergency lights flickering above him.
The lighthouse reveals its victims
At 2:14 a.m., a lighthouse beam slipped through a crack in the loading door. For one second, every windshield reflected the same image: a burning ship breaking apart offshore.
Terrence recognized the wreck. The wreck had happened in 1998. The beam came back, showing a different wreck, and then another.
Each ship had been lost on a night Terrence worked at the lighthouse. Terrence reached the radio and confessed. Terrence had turned the beam toward each ship, guiding captains onto the reef.
An impossible bargain
The lighthouse had promised to keep Terrence alive. Beneath the ferry's spare tire, Terrence found old photographs. Every picture showed Terrence beside the lamp controls, exactly one year younger than in the previous picture.
The final pass
The final pass showed the ferry sinking. When the beam passed over Terrence, the deck went dry, and the ferry disappeared. Only the log remained, its final line still visible.
