Part one opened with someone wearing Denny's coat, sitting inside Marisol's locked ice fishing hut. She had spotted a single trail in the snow, starting in the middle of the frozen field and ending at the door. The lock was still bolted.

Denny had gone to the truck for fuel, so she called him. He answered once, breathing hard. Scraping sounds filled the line.

Something moved beneath the floor

Marisol stepped outside. The print stopped beside the hut wall, with no tracks leading away. Something tapped beneath the floorboards.

She grabbed the auger and pulled them up. Black water moved below, even though the lake was frozen solid. A wet footprint appeared beside her boot.

Another formed behind it. Marisol ran for the truck. Fresh tracks crossed the field from every direction.

The figure at the edge was not Denny

Denny stood at the far edge, waving both arms. She shouted his name. He pointed toward the hut.

Through the window, she saw someone sitting in her chair, wearing Denny's coat. Her phone rang again. Denny's voice whispered from the speaker.

Don't come back. I'm still under the ice. The person at the field's edge was not Denny.

Where the footprints began

Denny was still beneath the ice, which is why nobody could explain where those first footprints began.
