Storage units echo worker's voice seconds before she speaks

Faye hears her own words repeated through empty storage units, each echo arriving sooner than the last, until she finds boxes labeled with things she hasn't said yet.

The storage units answered in Faye's voice. At midnight, Faye locked the facility after Curtis left to fetch his truck. She was checking the cameras when a voice repeated her last words through the concrete hallway.

Locked the facility at midnight. Faye tested it. Curtis is outside.

The echoes get faster

The answer came from unit 204 nine seconds later. She followed the sound past the metal doors. Every reply came from a different unit, and each one arrived sooner.

I'm going back to the office. The voice answered behind her before she reached the corner. Faye ran.

A warning from inside

Her key ring shook loose, and she dropped it. From unit 219, Curtis said, Faye, don't open this. She froze.

Curtis was still outside, shouting from the parking lot. The lock on unit 219 clicked. Inside sat a mattress, a child's bicycle, and dozens of boxes.

Tomorrow's words already recorded

Each box was labeled with something Faye had said that night. The last box had tomorrow's date. Inside, a recorder was already playing her voice.

I'm going to let Curtis in.
