Night manager finds a storage unit that shouldn't exist
June discovers Unit 18 on her ledger at a facility that only has 17 units on that row, then finds her own fate written in the records.
Unit 18 appeared on June's ledger, even though the row had only 17 units. She worked late at the storage facility, checking locks before the morning manager arrived. Most nights, she heard nothing but the buzz of the security lights between the metal doors.
That evening, an alarm chirped near the back fence. June entered the code. The alarm kept going.
The impossible unit
The panel showed Unit 18 closed, but its padlock hung loose. Inside, June found stacked boxes. A folding chair sat beside them.
On top was a train ticket dated for the next day. She called Amara in the office and read out the unit number. Amara said the facility had only 17 units on that row.
The ledger writes itself
June walked back. The alarm followed through the walls, softer now. On the desk, the ledger lay open to a fresh line.
June watched the pen move by itself, writing one letter at a time. The alarm stopped. The ledger ended with June's last words.
What Amara found
Unit 18 is still open. In the morning, Amara found June's keys inside Unit 18.
