Growing doorway measures Gideon overnight
A house sitter discovers a pantry door that grows six inches overnight, then keeps expanding as neighboring homes transform around him.
Gideon had a tape measure stretched across a pantry door when the opening reached 36 inches. It had grown six inches overnight. The year was 2016.
He was house-sitting in a cul-de-sac where every home shared the same plan. The pantry opening should be 30 inches. The owners had warned him the latch sticks, so he measured it.
The hallway appears
Now the shelves were gone. A narrow hallway led to a door identical to the one behind him. Gideon called Rosa across the street.
She brought the original blueprints and measured again. 42 inches. The hallway was widening.
The neighborhood transforms
Outside, the neighboring houses had changed. Each front door was wider than the last, circling the street like open mouths. At the dead end, a house stood where none had existed yesterday.
Its porch light switched on. Then Gideon's phone rang. The homeowners asked why he had left their pantry open.
Something begins measuring
He turned. Their house was gone. Only the pantry door remained on the lawn, tall enough for something enormous to pass through.
Rosa checked the tape. The marking stopped at 96 inches. The door kept growing.
Then every house opened at once, and something inside them began measuring Gideon.
