Invisible footprints follow Kofi into his truck
At a deserted rest stop, Kofi watched bare footprints appear in the snow with no one making them, and they began walking straight toward him.
A fresh footprint sank into the snow closer to Kofi than the last, though no one stood above it. At 2.08 a.m., Kofi had pulled into a rest stop.
It sat off Interstate 80. The building was locked, and the vending machines were dark. One sedan waited beneath a broken lamp.
Tracks from nowhere
While calling roadside assistance, Kofi looked beyond the picnic tables. Bare human tracks started in the middle of an untouched field, with no trail leading to them. From there, they continued toward the rest stop.
He had counted 30 prints before the fresh one appeared. Now, there were 31. Kofi backed toward his truck.
The pursuit begins
The tracks turned and followed him. Inside, the engine clicked but would not start. His phone showed a photograph he had never taken.
Kofi was asleep behind the wheel, with a pale face pressed against the passenger window. The invisible walker reached the asphalt. Its next wet footprint appeared inside the truck.
Standing until dawn
Kofi ran to the exact spot where the tracks had begun. The pursuit stopped at the field's edge. At dawn, police found his truck empty.
Kofi had survived until sunrise by never leaving that spot. He was still standing in the snow, surrounded by footprints that all wore his shoes.
