At 3 a.m., the radio in the hospital garage predicted tomorrow's weather. It did that 11 hours before the station's first bulletin. Petra was passing the payment machines when the announcer warned of heavy snow.

Outside, the pavement was dry, and an exit sign lit an empty ramp. She turned the volume down, but the voice followed her through speakers on every level. Visibility will drop to zero by dawn.

Security guard vanishes from his post

At the security desk, Kofi's coffee was still warm beside the monitors. Kofi was gone. On camera, he stood near the lower ramp, staring at a parked ambulance.

Petra called him. Her phone rang from inside it. Then the radio read tomorrow's temperature, matching the number on the morgue's cold room display.

The ambulance and the wheelchair

Kofi came running up the ramp. He said someone inside the ambulance had been tapping on the rear doors. The radio crackled.

Rain begins when Petra opens the trunk. Petra stood beside the ambulance as Kofi grabbed her arm. The trunk popped open anyway.

Inside sat a hospital wheelchair, soaked with fresh rain. The radio gave one final forecast. Tomorrow, Petra drives it upstairs.
