Security footage shows worker never approached the frozen pool
A maintenance worker investigating strange sounds at a closed recreation center discovered something impossible in the security footage.
The splash kept circling the pool after the water froze solid. Tomas entered the recreation center to inspect a burst pipe before winter damage spread. The indoor pool had been closed since October.
Workers drained it halfway, then abandoned it when the remaining water froze. Beneath the diving boards, the sound moved through lane one. It crossed to lane six, paused, then started over.
The pattern repeats
Every lap took 43 seconds. Tomas found no cracks in the ice. He called Lina, the building manager, and held his phone near the edge.
During the seventh lap, the sound stopped beside the deep end. It started again inside the locked filtration room. Tomas opened the door.
Inside the filtration room
Dry pumps stood disconnected for winter. Behind the pumps, something slapped inside a narrow return pipe. Lina said the pool's last lifeguard had drowned there, dragged into a drain too small for his shoulders.
The slapping sped up as frost spread across the tiles. Tomas ran outside and locked the center. At dawn, Lina checked six hours of security recording.
What the cameras captured
Tomas had entered alone and never approached the pool. For all six hours, Tomas had stood in the empty filtration room, pounding both hands against the return pipe. The splashing was still circling beneath his skin.
