Dead father's voice warns son from beneath frozen lake
A man ice fishing hears his father's voice coming from the hole in the ice, warning him about danger and offering proof he shouldn't ignore.
A dead man spoke through the fishing hole beside his son's boot. The voice was faint and annoyed.
Little Ko, you forgot the red gloves. Only Kofi's father called him that. He had been dead for 11 years.
The warning from below
Kofi backed toward the door. Outside, Terrence was crossing the frozen lake with a sled dragging behind him. Kofi waved for him to turn back, but Terrence kept coming.
The voice came through the hole again. Don't let that man inside. Terrence reached the hut and pounded once.
He said the ice had cracked near shore. They needed to leave now. Something scraped a hand beneath the floorboards.
Trapped inside
Kofi grabbed the handle, but the door wouldn't open. Terrence pulled from outside until the whole hut shifted across the ice. A wet red glove pushed through the fishing hole.
It was holding Kofi's father's watch. The red gloves were buried with him. The second hand was moving.
The voice outside
Terrence stopped pulling. Then he whispered through the door, Little Ko, open up.
