Toll booth worker encounters older version of himself in mysterious car
A toll booth operator on Route 41 is visited each hour by a driver who knows impossible details about his life, until he discovers the driver is himself.
Terrence worked four nights at the overnight toll booth on Route 41. Then he had three nights off.
The visitor who knew too much
Just before midnight, a driver stopped in his lane holding a cardboard sign through a window that never opened. Terrence radioed Priya in the next booth. She looked over and saw no car beside him.
At 1:30, the headlights returned. The driver raised another sign. That had happened yesterday. Each hour, the car came back with something else it knew. One sign named his Thursday break. Another gave his Sunday route home. The next knew about the 10 minutes he spent calling his daughter every Wednesday. Then the driver showed him one final sign.
The moment everything changed
At 6:12, Terrence locked the register and ran. Every lane gate dropped. His radio crackled with his own voice requesting overtime.
The driver lowered her window. Terrence was behind the wheel, older and gray-skinned, still in uniform. He whispered, I know when you leave because I never did.
What Priya hears now
Terrence abandoned the booth before sunrise. Since then, Priya has heard him inside every morning collecting exact change.
Nobody has explained the last time he looked over at her and said, See you tomorrow. That was yesterday.
