The doorbell rang after Priya disconnected it. Priya was house-sitting at number nine on the town's quietest street, feeding a tabby while the owners were away.

At 12:16, the bell rang and the porch camera showed an empty step. She pulled the chime from the wall. It rang again.

The sound moves through the house

Priya shut off the breaker. The bell came from the hallway. Then it came from the kitchen and upstairs. Each time, the camera showed the same empty porch.

Across the circle, another house lit up. Its bell began ringing. Another bell joined in. By then, the sound had gone around the cul-de-sac and every porch glowed.

A warning from a disconnected line

Priya called the owners. Their disconnected landline answered. A woman whispered, don't open the front door.

Outside, wet footprints crossed every porch, all pointing toward number nine. The bell rang from the basement. The floor plan showed no basement.

Something waits behind the door

Beneath the stairs, Priya found a narrow door. When the bell rang again, something behind it said, you're home.

By dawn, the owners returned and found the house empty. The doorbell still rang. This time, it came from inside.
